mint, retiring. joining me, one of his colleagues, senator john barrasso, chairman of the republican policy committee. i want to talk to you about the fiscal cliff. but, first, i want to talk about jim demint. >> sure. >> what is this say about the senate, about the ability of someone like jim demint, an avowed conservative, to accomplish what he wants to accomplish within that chamber, that he felt the need or saw the opportunity to step outside of the chamber? what does that say about the folk like yourself who are still within it? >> well, jim demint is going to continue to be a leader in this country for years to come. specifically on conservative issues. he's going to continue to push for ways to cut spending and to limit the size of government. and i welcome that. he's choosing to do it outside now rather than inside the senate but he's had a huge, positive influence on the senate and we're going to continue to see that for years to come. >> senator, this may seem like a simple question, but i wonder, and a lot of people do is the senate from your perspective, is the senate a difficul

for the union movement to continue. >> ruth, let me ask you about the fiscal cliff because within the hour john boehner was on the floor and said his meeting was nice. >> cordial. >> where are the cuts? both sides saying that the other has not been specific enough about what they're willing to put on the table. the calendar now is the real enemy. they have to get some kind of outline together or else it's going to be a legislative agreement to create another commission and tregers down the road, and that is going to freak the markets. >> we'll see how freaked the markets get. you may have better insight into that than i do. also, it's not just the calendar is an enemy. the desire to have the other side take the leap first is the enemy, and also, i think keep your eye on the debt ceiling. the president's desire to wrap this in the republicans desire to kick that can down the road and have perhaps more leverage in later debt ceiling negotiations could end up also being something that makes it very difficult to reach closure here by the time we all want to go away for the holiday. >> you can say t

-year elections, particularly in gubernatorial races, scott walker in z wisconsin, john casic in ohio, labor still has a lot of money, one of the better-organized constituencies in the country. they want to put that to use to show there's still a force in politics, they want to make sure they can push back what they see as a hostile anti-union tide that's sweeping across the midwest and hitting other countries that really is a lethal, if not mortal, threat to the union movement. so they still do have the resources we talked about. they still have a lot of money, still have a national network. i think they want to deploy that as much as they can in the next couple of elections. >> they've got real resources and a real history and tradition in states like pennsylvania and in nevada. perhaps less so in florida. and those are states that they are also keying in on. >> yeah, i mean, again, like different states have different union constituencies, sort of the premier gubernatorial races coming up in a place like virginia, where i'm at right now, or new jersey where governor christie's up, it's not clea
